Female Tattoo Culture

Project type

Major Project

Date

2024

For my major graphic design project, I created a book titled “Female Tattoo Culture.” This involved designing, printing, and binding a book with features like fold-out pages, diverse materials, and a dye sublimation printed cover made from practice tattoo skin.

The book includes in-depth case studies of tattooed women and female tattooists based on personal interviews, highlighting their experiences, motivations, and the significance of their tattoos. It also features influential female figures and celebrities who have shaped the perception of tattoos, providing context on the evolving landscape of tattoo culture. A fold-out timeline charts the changing perceptions of tattooed women throughout history, enhancing the reader’s understanding of cultural shifts. The use of various materials adds to the tactile and visual experience, making the book an art piece. The unique cover, made from practice tattoo skin, resonates with the book’s theme.

The design process began with extensive research and interviews with over 100 tattooed women and female tattooists. Using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, I designed the layout to balance text, images, and white space, integrating fold-out pages for engagement. High-quality paper and other materials were selected to enhance the book’s aesthetic and durability. I oversaw the printing to ensure accurate reproduction of colors, textures, and details, and the binding was done to ensure longevity and ease of use.

This project combined my skills in graphic design, photography, research, and storytelling to create a visually compelling and content-rich book that explores the world of female tattoo culture.
